I have used earplugs daily for over 10 years and have been swimming for over 20 years. when i swim i use earplugs mainly to block out the coach whistling and screaming at kids. foam earplugs are more comfortable than silicone but can't be used in the water so i was very excited to try a foam earplug for swimming ! big mistake ... i should have realized that in order to be safe to use in the water these are CLOSED CELL foam, not open cell foam like in regular foam earplugs ... closed cell foam cannot be compressed - it feels just like lightweight rubber - flexible but not compressible. long story short - i was unable to insert them into my ears ( i have $200 worth of earplugs at home and this is the first time i was unable to fit an earplug into my ear ! ) after trying for 5 minutes i gave them to my parents, which is what i do when i really should throw something out ...
