Can I Use SMPLUG030001 with a Respirator?
The Smart Plug was designed precisely for this type of application: respirators, welding mask, paint suits, hazmat, etc. With Smart Plug, speech is picked up from the ear canal rather than using a boom microphone, thanks to a hybrid technology of bone/flesh conduction and ear canal pressure. This provides clear communications while wearing respirators or other masks.
The Smartplug also features the "SENS" face to face technology - however, a face mask will most likely reduce the effectiveness of this communication method. The best method of communication may be for the operators to use the built in "short range" unit-to-unit communication via the built-in low power FM transmitter. This would provide push to talk (PTT) communications similar to two-way radio and is initiated by the inline PTT button on the earpiece cable assembly.
Whatever communication method is used, the key to its effectiveness is proper insertion of the ear tips in the ear canal and proper size foam ear tips.
More About Smart Plug Bluetooth
This full-featured Smart Plug can connect to either a Bluetooth equipped two-way radio or smartphone, but it can only connect to one Bluetooth device at a time. A user can hard wire to a two-way radio and then Bluetooth sync to a smartphone so all calls, whether radio or phone, go through the headset/earpieces. In that setup, a user can answer a phone call with a simple press on the multi-function button on the Smartplug, and terminate the call the same way.
So this full featured Smart Plug could be used with "short range" for short distance communications and smartphone connectivity, without the requirement of a separate two way radio.
When it comes to radio communications, there may be some confusion about the Smart Plug's "number of channels." The Smartplug comes pre-programmed with 8 low-power FM channels, which provides the built-in "short range" unit to unit communications feature. This feature is totally independent of the two-way radio, and it can be used as a compliment to the two-way radio network.

Sensear SmartPlug SMPLUG030001 With SENS™ Face-to-Face + Two Way Radio + BlueTooth + Built-in Short Range Two-Way Communications (NRR 31)3Joe WardFebruary 5, 2018I'll start by saying that these were the only thing I could find that met my needs so as critical as my review may be, I would probably buy them again. THE PROS: The fact that you can put your earplugs in in the morning and have no reason to take them out all day is huge. The talk through feature works well but (as you would expect) voices are somewhat hard to hear if you wear a hat that covers your ears. The two-way radio connection works very well and it's nice that it comes in over the bluetooth and hear-through sound. It also has A2DP bluetooth capability which allows you to stream music from your phone. The battery life is excellent also getting me 3-days at about 20deg. F. THE CONS. The in ear microphone picks up a lot of the noise from around you so in very loud environments it can still be tough to communicate. The cords from the ear plugs to the push to talk are rediculously short so there is no option of routing them behind your neck unless you want the ptt button on the back of your collar. The A2DP bluetooth streaming doesn't work if hear-through is active so listining to music could be a bit dangerous(something that could easily be fixed in software I would think?). The cords also seam to be excessively stiff from the ptt to the unit and the cord from the unit to my 2-way. The cost of everything involved is also high enough to be a deal breaker for most people ($85 for car charger and I think about $2.50 for 1 set of foam ear bud tips and about $100 for the cord to connect my 2-way radio (Kenwood)). Overall, I don't regret my decision to buy even though pretty much everyone I know would think I was crazy for spending $800+ on earplugs & accessories. I do however think the documentation is poor and there is plenty of room for improvement (especially in price).
